Here, you'll find everything you need to know about applying to Chinese universities, including critical timelines, qualifications, language requirements, and document preparation. Whether you’re targeting China’s prestigious C9 Alliance universities, one of the 985 or 211 institutions, or other top programs, this guide will help streamline your application journey and ensure you’re fully prepared for every step.

Application Periods

  • Spring Admission: Entry in March. Applications open in September (previous year).

  • Autumn Admission: Entry in September. Applications open in November (previous year).

    • Note: Each entry season only has one application period per year, so missing a deadline means waiting until the next cycle.

Top University Categories in China

  • C9 Alliance: The Nine Universities Alliance, including Tsinghua, Peking, and Fudan Universities, represents China’s elite institutions.

  • 985 Universities: A group of 39 top-tier research universities known for their resources and prestige.

  • 211 Universities: A group of 115 high-ranking universities, which includes all 985 institutions.

Interview Process

  • Format: Online with multiple interviewers; 5-15 minutes per interview.

  • Preparation: Applicants should have a passport ready for identity verification.

  • Additional for Art Majors: Online art exams are held in three rounds from December to February. Check for registration deadlines.

Nationality Requirements

Foreign applicants with previous Chinese nationality must provide proof of holding foreign nationality for over four years, including two years of residency abroad.

Age and Qualifications

  • Undergraduate: 18-25 years old (some programs allow up to 35).

  • Postgraduate: Under 40 years old (some flexibility may apply).

  • Foundation Programs: Minimum age 17; no age limit for language programs.

Language Proficiency Requirements

  • English Programs:

    • Accepted exams: IELTS, TOEFL, , SAT, AP, ACT, IB, GCE A-level, ATAR, NCEA, Abitur, Baccalauréat Général.

    • Alternatives: Proof of English instruction in prior education, or native English speakers from countries where English is the official language.

  • Chinese Programs:

    • Certificate of Chinese instruction from prior education.

    • HSK test results for Chinese language proficiency.
